Waves and Volcano
The natural beauty of Hawaii and the warm tropical climate, waves at the beach, and an active volcano makes it a destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologist. Hawaii's culture influenced by North America and Asia Because of its location in the mid-Pacific. With more than one million permanent residents and many visitors and U.S. military personnel Hawaiian culture spread throughout the world.
With Honolulu on the island of Oahu as the capital, State of Hawaii cover almost the entire island of Hawaii volcanic chain, which consists of hundreds of islands scattered over 2,400 km . Eight "main islands" are Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. To avoid confusion with the state as a whole, the island of Hawaii is often called 'The Big Island'.
All the islands in the Hawaiian Islands are formed from volcanic activity of the magma source beneath the sea. Tectonic plate beneath the Pacific Ocean moves into northwest, slowly creating new volcanoes. Because of the location of the hotspot, the only active volcano located in the vicinity of the southern part of the Big Island, Lōihi, an underwater mountain.
As part of ancient Polynesian culture, surfing has been for centuries in Hawaiian culture. Surfing was first observed in Tahiti in Spring 1767 by Samuel Wallis, and a crew of Dolphin who stopped at the island on June 17, 1767. Lieutenant James King became the first to write about the art of surfing in Hawaii. At that moment he is finishing his journal Captain James Cook in 1779.
Mark Twain visited Hawaii in 1866 and he wrote:
"In one place we came upon a large company of naked natives, of both sexes and all ages, amusing themselves with the national pastime of surf-bathing."
